GREENSBORO For one half, the Butler Bulldogs looked like the two-time defending state champions that had won 12 straight playoff games.

In the second half, the Bulldogs looked like anything but champions, as Page scored 34 unanswered points to turn a 20-point deficit into a 40-26 win over Butler in the NCHSAA 4A West regional semifinal game. Page (13-0) will host undefeated Mallard Creek (13-0) next week in the 4AA West final.

After Friday’s 42-20 win against arch-rival Independence, Butler High football coach Brian Hales said his team finally is beginning to play the way he imagined it would back in the summer.

Butler (11-1) won its 11th straight game and its 12th straight playoff game over the past three seasons. The Bulldogs scored on five of their first six possessions and led by as many as 30 points.

In many ways, as the Butler football players celebrated with their fans along the railing on the visitors’ side of the stands at Independence High School on Oct. 28, things looked about status quo – at least over the past two years, when the Bulldogs have won 40 of 41 games and collected two Class 4AA state titles.

And last week’s gritty 38-26 win over rival Independence was another big win over a good team, and clinched the Bulldogs’ third consecutive Southwestern 4A conference title.
